Background:  School Rumble is a popular high school romance and comedy manga written and drawn by Jin Kobayashi.  A 26 episode anime adaptation was broadcasted in 2004/2005 followed by two OVA releases.  In 2006,  a second season was released named School Rumble - Ni Gakki (Second Term). North American licensing of School Rumble is owned by FUNimation and DVD distribution will begin in 2007.
Story:
School Rumble is a very funny high school life love comedy with a large cast of characters.  The central story focuses on Tsukamoto Tenma, a freshman in class 2-C.  Tenma has fallen in love with her classmate Karasuma Ooji.  However, due to bad timing, luck and/or lack of confidence, Tenma could never confess her feelings to Karasuma.  Tenma is not very smart, athletic or graceful, but somehow the school's number one delinquent, Harima Kenji, has fallen in love with her.  Harima shows a tough exterior at school, but has as hard a time confessing to Tenma as Tenma does with Karasuma.  As for Karasuma himself, the love of his life appears to be eating curry.

The love triangle between Harima, Tenma and Karasuma produce many hilarious scenarios filled with hijinx and misunderstandings.  At the end of each episode though, none of the characters' situations improve anymore than they had started with.

As the School Rumble series progresses, more love relationships develop from other characters in the anime.  The school's most popular girl, a rich half Japanese half American named Eri Sawachika, develops a love hate bond with Harima.  It is probably the most entertaining of match-ups because while they difference in social status, Eri and Harima share similarities in their personalities.  Harima does not acknowledge his relationship with Eri, but Tenma misunderstands and actively supports the coupling of Eri and Harima.  This makes Harima even more desperate about confessing his love to Tenma because it would look like he was two-timing Eri - who also happens to be one of Tenma's best friends.

To make matters worse for Harima, recently a third relationship surfaced between himself and Tsukamoto Yakumo, Tenma's younger sister.  Yakumo is assisting Harima on his secret hobby as a manga artist, hence they spend a lot of time together; sometimes late at night working on Harima's manga manuscripts.  Tenma is very protective of her shy younger sister and often gets the idea that Harima is a pervert who is taking advantage of Yakumo.  But Yakumo understands Harima and tries to convince her sister that he isn't such a bad person.  None of this helps Harima because to Tenma it looks likes Yakumo is protecting Harima because she has feelings for him.

And that's just a small taste of the multi-sided love troubles bouncing around the world of School Rumble.  Although the main characters are Tenma and Harima, there are plenty of side stories involving other members of the cast to keep things fresh.  The smart writing, funny characters and their wacky antics has made this anime a hit with a large fanbase in Japan and abroad.
