Anime Summary / Synopsis:
Some time in the future, strange mechanical
insect-like creatures called Mushi (Japanese for bugs) have started
appearing in the cities. They prey particularly on young
children and are said to have the ability to consume their dreams and
thoughts. Children ‘infected’ with the
Mushi are called Hosts. In return for their dreams, the Mushi
grant them powers. But eventually when the children lose
their dreams, the Mushi fully matures, killing the Host in the process.
The Mushi are generally feared by the public, and
even Hosts are treated like outcasts. A band of Hosts have
organized a group called Mushibane in order to create a place where
they don’t have to live in fear all the time. They
are led by a strong willed female leader named
“Ladybird.” The main protagonist, Daisuke
“Kakko” Kusuriya, is a Host and also
operative of the SECEO, a military-like organization whose goal is to
locate Hosts and destroy the Mushi. Although Kakko is the top
operative of SECEO, he is haunted by the event of his first mission
where he had to kill a young girl’s Mushi. When a
Host’s Mushi is killed, he become a Fallen, a shell of a
person who is devoid of emotion or will. It is now ten years
later, and Kakkou has been assigned to a high school where the SECEO
suspects Ladybird is a student of. But on his way to school,
Kakkou comes face to face with the girl he met on his first mission.
