Background: BECK was a manga created by Harold Sakuishi and was serialized in Monthly Shonen Magazine in 2000. Sakuishi was inspired to write BECK from his interest in rock music and culture. The anime adaptation first aired in 2004 and was directed by Osamu Kobayashi. The anime has been licensed by FUNimation Entertainment and tha manga by Tokyopop.

summary: Yukio Tanaka, also known as Koyuki by his friends, didn't have much going for him at school or in life. The extent of his musical interest was in some cookie-cutter pop singer idol. But everything in his life is about to change when he meets Ryuusuke Minami. The two met when Koyuki saved a weird looking dog which had belonged to Ryuusuke. Koyuki later learns that Ryuusuke is actually a talented guitarist and composer who is forming a new underground rock band after the break up of his previous band. Although Koyuki had no prior experience with the guitar, Ryuusuke saw a natural talent in him and encouraged him to practice. Koyuki begins to absorb everything about rock and roll culture, and in the process meets a new love interest, Maho Minami who also happens to be Ryuusuke’s sister. Maho’s outgoing nature help Koyuki gain confidence in himself and practice even harder. Eventually he is invited to join Ryuusuke’s new band, BECK. Their dream is to become famous enough to tour the USA, but the road ahead is an arduous and at times dangerous one. |
